The “Polysphere” project comes from a collaboration between THIBAUT, the French manufacturer of machines for all types of natural or agglomerated materials (granite, marble, limestone…), Chevrin-Geli specialized in restoration and renovation of ancient buildings who shared their Thibaut TC1100 sawing centre and their expertise, YELMINI quarry which supplied the stones to build the sphere and the Italian architects Giuseppe Fallacara & Maurizio Barberio who designed this original masterpiece.
The Polysphere weighs 2.7 tons (5400 pounds) and has a diameter of 1400mm / 55.1’’. The bottom part is monolithic and was made by machining a single block of “Bleu de Savoie” stone.
The top part is made of 120 small blocks made from slabs of different colours and thicknesses: “Bleu de Savoie” and white stone from Angola. The blocks were assembled manually.
The sphere required 170 hours of programming, machining and assembling. The top part especially needed advanced expertise and time: 60 hours of milling and sawing the small blocks and 60 hours of assembling and finishing.
This project is all about passion. It gathered various actors from the stone world who shared their expertise and passion to realize this original masterpiece.
